Birthday weekend: part 2
While I was in Puerto Vallarta for a little post-season decompression, my birthday happened. Let’s just say that facing 24 is a lot less scary when you spend it snorkeling and ziplining.
Traveling from Nuevo Vallarta, where we were staying, all the way across Puerto Vallarta into the jungles. The journey itself took about an hour… but man, was it worth it!
At first, we were quite wary about the whole operation because we booked this tour off of the Malecon—a giant tourist trap in boardwalk form—for a really cheap price. We were picked up at a gas station as the only passengers. He didn’t pick up any other passengers until we were 15 minutes from the destination! But more on sketchy tours in another post.
Another thing of this tour is that they didn’t allow personal cameras. They had ziplining photographers following us at every line, making us feel like total celebrities! Not that I minded… However, I would’ve liked being able to use my own GoPro instead of the one they provided. I mean, if you have the mounts, what’s the harm in letting me capture my own film? We were all standing there, facing the laptop while the photo lady was trying to sell us these photos. The photos were in slideshow mode so every 5 seconds, a new one would pop up. Suddenly, she stopped talking and started laughing. I had no idea what she was laughing at until I looked back at the screen and saw this:
After a few warm up lines, we hiked up to our first big line. I could tell it was big based on how out of breath I was by the time we reached the top. As the front guy strapped himself in, he looked around our group and said, “Who wants to zipline across upside down?”
Without thinking, I said, “I DO.”
“Ok, come here.”
It was one hell of a ride. Once the canopy dropped beneath me, however, did I really start to scream. It was like I was flying!
“Man, you got more balls than I do!” the burly 40-year-old man who came in behind me said. “That was really high!”
Funnily, it never really occurred to me not to do it. I’ve been so into trying out new things lately that I’ve gotten into the habit of just going for it.
I think I like the jungle portion of Puerto Vallarta more than the more resort-y and beachy side of it. Maybe it’s because it’s been so long since I’ve been in any biodome close to a tropical jungle but I really really liked it in there. I could’ve spent days just walking through the jungle.
I think this means South America is calling my name.
Have you ever been ziplining? Where?
