As this summer progresses without me living at home, I’ve been venturing into the Real World options of weekend celebrations, holidays, and such.
Believe me when I say nothing makes you feel older (grown up?) than not spending the holidays with your family (and high school friends). Or spending it with other families. Or having a weird 20-year-old 4th of July rager on some rooftop.
It’s just weird.
But… weird doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it!
I stayed a few nights at a friend’s house. She lives about 1.5 hours from Ann Arbor and promised me ribs. How could I resist?!
We went on a lovely early morning bike ride.
Spent a lot of the day in the car… which made for CAR PICS! Who doesn’t love car pics?
Went to the Detroit Zoo. Where we pretended to be models.
And went to her aunt’s house for bonfire/firework setting.
We were lighting fireworks in their driveway (because apparently people in Michigan don’t gather around a downtown for fireworks or something?). A firework actually got knocked over and started attacking us like we were in a war zone or something.
Fact: even though Michelle likes to think she have fast reflexes, she will never be able to dodge a bullet. I couldn’t even dodge the firework shards. About 5 hit me in the leg. Surprisingly not painful, though.
Although I later found out that the friends that stayed in Ann Arbor all gathered on a rooftop somewhere and had a rager/cookout the entire day, I don’t think I would’ve changed anything. I will not succumb to FOMO.
Since I’ve always spent the 4th with/near my family, this was a great alternative… even if I did somewhat get homesick. The only time I get homesick!
How was your 4th?
